The imagery on Creatures of an Hour is much deeper than the lyrics. It’s in the hushed tones of singer Tessa Murray’s voice and the echoing reverb surrounding it. Still Corners — originally just Murray and songwriter Greg Hughes (guitar and vocals), but now rounded out by guitarist Leon Dufficy, bassist Luke Jarvis and drummer Paul Mayhew — create a picture of a rainy London with their gothic dreampop songs.

Murray’s voice often hides beneath the wall of atmospherics, occasionally peeking out from the echoes. But even without overtly demanding it, her soft singing commands attention like Broadcast’s Trish Keenan. Her breathy vocals seamlessly coalesce with the music.

Despite its darkness, Creatures of an Hour is one of the strongest debuts of the year. The album will likely receive repeated spins as the days grow shorter and darker.

Fortunately, Only in Dreams is full of changes. The surf guitars, clap-along rhythms and girl-group harmonies are held over from the first album, but aren’t the main focus. Instead, the group moved about two decades forward, sounding like a version of The Pretenders if Chrissie Hynde were from California, not Akron. You can even hear influences from groups like The Smiths and The Stone Roses.

Producers Richard Gottehrer and The Ravonettes’ Sune Rose Wagner ditch the lo-fi for an incredibly clean sound. The bright production shifts lead singer Dee Dee from the muffled garage vocals of I Will Be to a true lead singer — more Blondie than Bethany Cosentino.

The album is definitely a huge step forward. While Dum Dum Girls may still bear the weight of their influences, Only in Dreams is an effort to step out from under them.

Simply put, American Goldwing manages to do two things at once. It is both a deeply thoughtful album, particularly “Love the Way You Walk Away” and “My Home Town,” as well as a boot-stomping rocker with tracks like “Might Find it Cheap” and “Street Fighting Sun” leading the way. American Goldwing is both a fun album and one that is marvelously crafted. It takes the sound brought to life by Wilco and brought to popularity by Mumford and Sons to a whole new level of consistency and brilliance without a bad track on the album.
