SXSW 2012: Shows and Bands We’re Excited About

This year, SXSW is off the hook as usual. There are way too many great things to see, and with so many good bands playing in the same city — and in many cases, at the exact same time (just different venues) — we thought you’d like some help making decisions.

We were sweet enough to gather a list of a few choice bands and showcases that caught our eye, and we know this might not help. It might make your decisions more difficult, but tough cookies, you’re at SXSW. Deal with it.

Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt

Crazy props, spandex, capes, bright colors, and elated band members. Perhaps they’ll feed the audience cake, as they’ve done at past shows.

Mike Watt to Publish Photographic Memoir: “Mike Watt: On and Off Bass”

Mike WattLegendary punk bassist Mike Watt (of Minutemen, fIREHOSE, The Stooges, Unknown Instructors) will be releasing a photographic memoir on May 1, 2012 entitled Mike Watt: On and Off Bass. Tour diaries are distilled to their essence, and are juxtaposed with Watt’s photography. Watt’s writing is insightful, funny, intimate and honest, as he explores topics like John Coltrane, drunk female fans, long hauls and overcoming performance fears. The diary excerpts cover the past 10 years of his career, including his first performance with Iggy Pop, and the creation of three punk operas with The Missingmen.

The book will be 8″ x 10″, 112 pages, and full color, published by Three Rooms Press.

Jason Segel Will Not Be Involved in “Muppets” Sequel

The Muppets with Jason Segel

Though a sequel for The Muppets has been greenlit, writer and star of the 2011 film, Jason Segel, will not be involved. Segal has confirmed that he won’t be signing on to write or perform.

“It’s true [that I won't be in the sequel],” said Segel, “but it’s totally amicable. My goal was to bring the Muppets back, and I did that, leaving them in very good hands.

“All I wanted to do was to set the stage for them to do whatever they wanted. I’m sure I’ll return in some capacity here and there, but that was half a decade of my life. Five years of hard work. I’m ready for a little puppet break.” (via CNN)

Atari Teenage Riot to Donate Sony Ad Proceeds to FreeAnons.org

Atari Teenage Riot

I was sitting on my arse watching TV when the sounds of Atari Teenage Riot’s “Black Flags” began pumping out of my stereo. It was an ad for Sony’s latest handheld gaming system, the PS Vita. I was immediately confused. What was my favorite anti-corporate, OWS-supporting, revolutionary techno band doing selling their music to Sony, of all corporations?

I looked into it, and Alec Empire explains it all on the band’s Tumblr:

“If you are new to my music or me as a person you might not know that I had some beef with Sony in the year 1999 over a camcorder advert in South East Asia (a track of mine was basically used against my permission)…Even though the thing got settled in court kind of, I never felt they paid what they owed.”

He went on to say that in classic ATR style, they’ll be donating all proceeds to FreeAnons.org, a group that provides support for those who are facing prosecution for alleged involvement in “Anonymous” activities. The group states that they believe that community acts of internet protest are not crimes nor conspiracies and should not be prosecuted as such.

Well played, Alec Empire! Well played. -Heather Schofner

“Pancake Mountain” Has Aired Its Final Episode

Pancake Mountain guests

After eight years and an unfortunately failed attempt to raise funding, Washington DC-based “Pancake Mountain” will cease production. The independent children’s show is the brainchild of Scott Stuckey. It debuted in 2004 and is perhaps best known for the video “Vowel Movement” by The Evens, featuring Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina.

From the press release:

For eight fantastic years, we have had the unbelievable fortune to work with the most talented, creative and fun people in the industry. From our very first guest, the late Vic Chesnutt, to the young superstar-to-be Katy Perry, we have enjoyed creating fantastic experiences with the best of the best. Who could forget Arcade Fire, Jenny Lewis, Eddie Vedder, The White Stripes, Kings of Leon and 72 other musical acts!! Each and every one of them has our undying gratitude for their involvement in our little show that wasn’t. And their playful, creative spirits will be a part of us forever. There are far too many to list by name, but hopefully they know how much they all meant to us. We can’t thank them enough for their dedication, imagination and time.
