Listening to At War With Self’s Acts of God, one gets the feeling that music of this ilk is best suited for film soundtracks. Of course, one must concede it’d only work for one fucked up flick. Much of the music found here could easily (and lazily) be termed “soundscapes,” indeed, an odious hack phrase if ever there was one in the wanting arsenal of music critics. Much of it is instrumental, though the moments of vocals are marked by a deep-toned bosso nova sounding golden throat. They’re bizarre, as is much of the music. Throughout the record various moods and styles appear, from acoustic-guitar led pieces to compelling, mathy salvos. A distinct bass sound reoccurs; perhaps it’s a fretless? Prog overtones run rampant. This is not for everyone.
