THE COMMONWEALTH – S/T

reviewed by Garrett Lyons | Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

This album is a cry for help. The Commonwealth has all the right influences. It’s rock inspired by jazz, folk, and even a hint of bands like The Talking Heads. It’s just boring. It’s tedious music that is simply not at all entertaining to listen to. Every track from the poorly vocalized “Gravity” to the absurd Cuban jazz inspired “Mirror” to the Johnny Cash styled “Out of the Grave” is just a pile of half-baked ideas. Nothing works. The lyrics are a farce. The vocals sound like Ben Folds after smoking a carton of Marlboro Reds. There is no redeeming feature here. Every song feels three times as long as it actually is and by track five you want it to stop. It’s painful. Just so downright painful.
