“Life is Too Short For the Wrong Job”

02.21.2011

This is quite possibly the best advertising campaign I’ve ever seen (www.jobsintown.de via Reddit). I pretty much feel like the ice cream lady every day.

The one I most relate to is cigarette machine guy because I know the look on his face so well. That’s the look I had on my face through much of my part-time retail job. That’s the look you get on your face when you want nothing more than to make a viciously sarcastic comment but you know that if you actually do it, the door’s going to hit you on the backside in no time at all. I’ve seen the look on petrol pump guy’s face as well. He’s chalked up a fair few disciplinaries, probably for swearing at the customers, and he looks like he’s one abusive customer away from blowing his top.

And you can tell that all of them need another job as a matter of urgency, you can see that they’re all profoundly miserable. That’s what the wrong job does to you; it makes it impossible for you to even contemplate coming to work with a smile on your face. The wrong job will suck out your soul, you won’t be able to name a single thing that’s good about it. And personally, I don’t think that anyone should have to settle for that.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no advocate of the “Nothing but the perfect job for me” attitude because the perfect job doesn’t exist. But there’s a difference between a job that’s imperfect and a job that’s wrong. The graduate jobs market is tough, true, and you will need to compromise but no-one should compromise as far as the wrong job.
