HUNTERS, RUN! – EP3

reviewed by Mason Souza

hunters run ep3 HUNTERS, RUN! EP3EP3 is the third of four seven-inch releases from New York’s Hunters, Run! The series of EPs are being released by the band’s own label, Battle Standard. Even though EP3 is only two tracks deep, it gave me a good taste of what Hunters, Run! has to offer and introduced me to their modernized power-pop sound. “Life of Crime” begins with thumping bass notes and synth chords slowly draping over. The lyrics, “Too much prey, not enough hunters/Far too much lightning, not enough thunder,” are then added-a line that seems to say a lot about what the band stands for.

“My Ageless Brother” is a more playful song, with some childish, kazoo-ish sounding instruments. These aren’t cheesy or gimmicky at all, however. They fit in perfectly with the song and add some nice layers to it. Eventually, the song breaks down to crashing drums, guitar and loops.

If what you’ve heard on EP3 and the other releases from Hunters, Run! Makes you want to hear more from the band, you aren’t alone. The two songs alone on this record make me wonder how good a full fledged Hunters, Run! album would sound. Luckily you don’t have to look far, as the band has released Forgotten Souvenirs of the Modern Age and Broken Sounds, both full-length albums.
