As roller derby leagues pop up all over North America, it is clear that this sport of women racing around a track on skates has been resurrected and redefined with 2k flair. The degree of originality and artistic expression is shown as each team member creates and performs their own persona on the rink. Competitors with names like “Trash n’ Smash” are governed by rules that seem to be broken often. Women with attitude, physical fouls, speed, and crashes — roller derby guarantees great entertainment for fans.

Susan Moss provides a glimpse into this world on wheels, with both candid and specific photos that bring to light the elements of this emerging not-so-feminine but all-female sport. The introduction provides a brief history of roller derby and makes a great beginning to a collection of photos which accurately show what roller derby is all about. The photos exhibit the sexy, unique outfits, clever nicknames, equipment, and some lovely but dangerous-looking women. Other photos show some of the antics that take place during competition. Photos are creatively composed with various colors and textures, and are somewhat random. While the randomness makes this book read like a yearbook or documentary, the quotes provide insight and help the book flow. The glossary of terms provided is both enlightening and amusing. Offering a glimpse into a world that few people even know exists, Roller Girls gives an interesting view of the glam, game, and lifestyle of roller derby.
